Rolex GMT-Master ref. 1675/3 “Root Beer” – Matte Brown Nipple Dial – circa 1978
Originally delivered in the late 1970s, this GMT-Master ref. 1675/3 represents a period when Rolex combined sport and elegance in a way only the Root Beer ever truly managed. The matte brown nipple dial defines the watch, giving it a softer, more organic presence than later glossy versions.
If you are a little bit like me, this is exactly the kind of dial you fall for.
The brown tone sits deep and warm, with a velvety matte surface that reacts gently to light. The applied gold nipple hour markers rise from the dial and add structure, while the aged tritium plots bring a creamy contrast that makes the whole layout feel calm and balanced. Together with the gilt hands and text, the dial has a richness that only comes from time and originality working together.
The bezel is a single-color brown insert with golden script, now lightly faded into a soft, leathery tone. It no longer looks new or sharp-edged — instead, it has taken on a smooth, worn-in character that fits the dial perfectly. Subtle, warm, and unmistakably vintage, it completes the Root Beer look without shouting.
Original hands with aged luminous material and sharp, well-preserved dial printing — a combination you rarely see on matte dials that have developed this kind of patina. Nothing blurred, nothing weak, just honest aging with strong contrast.
The 40 mm steel and yellow gold case shows signs of age, but still wears very well and keeps its sharp, classic and flat vintage GMT profile. The acrylic crystal with Cyclops adds that soft vintage distortion that modern sapphire simply cannot replicate.
It is fitted with its correct two-tone Jubilee bracelet with signed clasp, in good vintage condition, with light stretch consistent with age.
This is not just a two-tone GMT anymore — it is a watch that shows what time can do when it does it right. For the collector who enjoys watches with warmth and character, and who is not looking for something sterile or modern.
