Omega Seamaster Chronograph Ref. 145.016.68
The late 1960s marked a fascinating period for Omega. While the Speedmaster was making history, the Seamaster chronograph line quietly evolved into something altogether different. References such as the 145.016.68 embraced the era’s changing design language, pairing robust chronograph engineering with bold tonneau shaped cases and striking dial layouts that continue to resonate with collectors today.
This example captures that spirit beautifully.
The classic panda dial combines a matte black base with three white registers, creating a layout that is both functional and visually balanced. An orange central chronograph seconds hand introduces just enough colour to remind you that this was designed as a sporting instrument rather than a dress watch. Over the decades, the tritium lume has matured into a deep creamy tone, adding warmth to the otherwise monochrome palette. The dial and hands display minor spots and gentle patina throughout, subtle reminders of more than fifty years of life without compromising the overall presentation.
Equally pleasing is the case. The stainless steel tonneau case retains its original circular brushed finish, preserving the crisp industrial aesthetic that defines the reference. It is a detail that is easily lost during restoration and one that contributes greatly to the authenticity of a vintage watch.
Powering the watch is Omega’s manually wound calibre 861, one of the brand’s most respected chronograph movements. Introduced as the successor to the calibre 321, it became the backbone of Omega’s chronograph production for decades thanks to its robust construction, ease of service and proven reliability. It remains one of the most rewarding vintage chronograph movements to wind and wear.
The watch is further accompanied by its original Omega signed Hesalite crystal, complete with the embossed Omega logo at its centre, another small but important detail that collectors appreciate.
To complement the warm tones of the aged tritium, we have paired the watch with our The Desert Drift suede strap. The soft sand coloured suede enhances the vintage character of the watch without competing with it, resulting in a combination that feels both timeless and understated.
The appeal of this reference lies not in perfection, but in preservation. It has aged naturally, retaining the details that matter most and acquiring the kind of character that cannot be recreated. Honest examples such as this have become increasingly difficult to source, making it an attractive choice for the collector who values originality over restoration and appreciates a vintage chronograph that tells its own story.
