The Golf Club Automatic Ref. 1829 is a distinctive late-1970s design from IWC Schaffhausen, combining a sporty look with clean, understated lines. Its plated, rhodium-finished dial has a brushed texture and a neutral grey tone that works well with almost any strap choice.
Inside is the automatic Calibre 8541 with date, a movement originally developed for models like the IWC Ingenieur 1832. It’s known for being reliable and well-built, making it a solid everyday movement even by modern standards.
The Ref. 1829 was not a limited edition, but production is estimated at only around 1,000 pieces, which makes it relatively hard to find today. A related reference, the Ref. 1830, was also produced with an integrated steel bracelet.
The design is generally attributed to Gérald Genta during his time working with IWC in the late 1970s. While more low-key than some of his better-known designs, the connection is clear in the proportions and overall shape.
This example shows normal signs of wear, but the case remains sharp. The dial has some visible spots, and the original lume has aged naturally to a darker patina, which fits the watch well and confirms its originality.
Overall, this is an uncommon vintage IWC with a strong design background and good potential for long-term collectability.
Just serviced by my watchmaker.
