Vacheron Constantin Overseas Jumbo ref. 42040 — a first-generation piece from around 1997, and one of the purest expressions of the original integrated sports-luxury design.
This example features a striking sunburst-brushed dark grey dial that reads almost black in most lighting, giving the watch a deep, understated presence on the wrist. The tritium lume has aged naturally into a warm cream tone, adding just the right amount of vintage character without losing legibility.
At 37mm, it wears with the same balanced proportions as the legendary 222 “Jumbo,” combining elegance and presence in equal measure. The integrated bracelet is beautifully executed with alternating brushed and polished surfaces, delivering that unmistakable early-Overseas feel.
Inside beats the ultra-thin automatic Calibre 1310, finished with a solid 21k gold rotor.
This is the original Overseas in its most honest form: refined, robust, and still highly underappreciated compared to its contemporaries. A true late-90s Vacheron sports watch with real presence, character, and timeless wearability.
The case shows signs of wear and previous polishing, but still presents with a beautiful, sharp overall profile to the naked eye.
On close inspection with a loupe, minor dial patina can be seen, a quiet reminder of its age and authenticity rather than a distraction.
