What are we looking at?
A Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox E876 with a particularly good colour combination. The deep blue outer dial surrounds a champagne alarm disc that has developed strong golden-brown patina. Together with the solid gold bezel inlay, it gives this version a distinctly luxurious feel.
I particularly like how much of the sporty character remains. The broad cushion case, large Arabic numerals and two crowns give it the purposeful look you want from a mechanical alarm watch. The gold suits it without making it feel dressy.
A proper 1970s design icon, and one that still looks remarkably current. To my eye, the Hermès H08 owes quite a bit to this E876. Obviously just my opinion, but I would be surprised if there had not been a Memovox somewhere on the mood board.
What do we need to know?
The alarm disc has aged quite noticeably. Its former champagne surface now shows mottled golden and brown tones, with an uneven patina across the centre. It is a prominent part of this watch’s appearance, and I like the contrast with the rich blue surrounding it.
The stainless steel case measures 38 mm and retains its solid gold bezel inlay. Both crowns are original.
The automatic calibre 916 has been serviced and is currently measuring +10 seconds per day, with a strong amplitude of 300° and a beat error of 0.1 ms.
It comes paired with our Desert Drift strap in 20 mm. The sandy colour works particularly well with the warm tones of the alarm disc.
