What are we looking at?

A very good and honest ZENITH A273 from the late 1960s, powered by the manually wound calibre 146HP.

The A273 belongs to the final generation of hand-wound ZENITH chronographs before the arrival of the automatic El Primero in 1969. Inside is the Martel-derived calibre 146HP: a beautifully constructed, 17-jewel column-wheel chronograph running at 18,000 vibrations per hour. It offers a traditional three-register layout with running seconds, a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour counter.

The original silver dial is particularly well balanced. Three recessed, finely finished registers sit within a discreet outer tachymeter scale, while the applied hour markers and blued-steel hands provide just enough contrast. The small applied ZENITH star keeps everything nicely restrained.

At 37 mm, the case was considered large in its day. Together with the long, straight lugs, it still has plenty of presence on the wrist without losing its proper vintage proportions.

What do we need to know?

The silver dial remains in its original and untouched condition. It shows natural patina and several age-related marks, all clearly visible in the photographs. The remaining lume has aged to a warm tone and works very well with the softly aged dial and blued handset.

The all-stainless-steel case appears unpolished and retains its original shape, with sharp edges and clearly defined facets along the lugs. It shows honest scratches and signs of wear throughout. Nothing hidden, nothing dressed up—and importantly, the good angles are still there.

The movement has been serviced and all functions work perfectly. The chronograph starts, stops and resets precisely. At the time of cataloguing, the watch was running at approximately +3 seconds per day with a strong amplitude of 314 degrees.

The watch has a screw-down caseback and is fitted with a Plexiglass crystal. Lug width is 19 mm.

No redial, no fresh polishing and no attempt to make it look younger than it is. Just an honest A273 with the right movement, a sharp case and six decades of character.
