HEUER AUTAVIA 7863C “DATO” | MK1 | 1968 | SERIAL 138888
Some watches have a detail that stays with you. On this Autavia, it is the number between the lugs: 138888.
The four consecutive eights make it an unusual serial in their own right, but the number also places the watch at the very beginning of the 7863C production run. The known serial range starts at 138XXX, dating this example to 1968, the year the reference was introduced. A fitting number for a first-year watch.
The 7863C is often called the “Dato” and belongs to the earliest generation of compressor-case Autavias. Its reverse panda layout is unmistakably HEUER: two white registers, a black dial and no unnecessary decoration.
This example has clearly been worn, but it has not lost the details that make it interesting. The case appears unpolished and has taken on a natural patina over the years. The dial remains remarkably fresh, while the tachymeter hand has aged to a warm vanilla colour. That small touch of contrast gives the watch much of its personality.
The original crown and pushers are still present. It also has the correct early small-tooth bezel and its original insert, now faded to a soft ghosted grey.
The Valjoux 7732 movement is running well and is covered by our 12-month warranty.
We have paired the watch with our handmade “The Desert Drift” suede strap and an original HEUER pin buckle.
Early compressor Autavias are not easy to find with this much of their original character intact. Add the 138888 serial, and this becomes an example that is difficult to repeat.
