IWC INGENIEUR JUMBO SL Automatic – Ref.1832 – Gerald Genta – 1983

A dream for many watch collectors, like myself. The first and original Gerald Genta designed IWC Ingenieur SL (aka “Jumbo”) – Ref. 1832, automatic.
Designed by Genta along with the 3700 Patek Philippe Nautilus and 5402 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the IWC Ingenieur is part of the “Jumbo” trilogy of integrated bracelet sport watches that keep turning heads even decades after their introduction.

The 1832 was not a great commercial success back in 1979, meaning that only 598 pieces were made in total and only 543 in steel, making the Ingenieur Jumbo about ten times rarer than the PP Nautilus and AP Royal Oak of the same decade.

Besides its rarity compared with these “siblings”, the 1832 had much more to offer than just 120m of water resistance. It is highly anti-magnetic and shock-proof, a highly technical sports watch…THE IWC sports watch, as many would confirm.

Back in 1979 its price tag was 3850 DM (2400 USD), which was 3-times the price of a Rolex Milgauss.

Most examples on the market have a “SWISS” only dial, which is a service part and not the original dial.
The correct dial for the 1832 SL is a black hand-turned guilloché, with tritium applied baton indices, signed “T Swiss T”, like the one we offer. Please appreciate the exact matching color of the hands’ and indices’ tritium lume.

Condition:
The 1832 is in excellent vintage condition, with minor signs of wear and polishing. The watch case remains sharp, where it should, the bracelet has no stretch and the bezel is centered.
The black dial is, where the magic happens, it is in flawless condition with matching super warm, even and creamy patina of the tritium lume, just like you want tritium to look like on an original dial and hands set.

This collectible and (really) rare watch comes with the original IWC certificate of origin and hang-tag with serial number, stamped by WEMPE, Germany on December 24th, 1983 – and the 1983’s white IWC box…what a nice Christmas gift…isn’t it?

Caliber: IWC cal. 8541B, serviced and running great

The bracelet fits up to a good 19cm wrist circumference.
