Jaeger-LeCoultre 18K yellow gold Chronograph – Valjoux 72 – late 1960s

If you’re not (yet) into gold watches, this one might just change your mind!

Only a handful of examples of this 36mm solid 18k yellow gold chronograph were ever produced, featuring dials signed solely with “LeCoultre.” (Speculatively, just a few hundred pieces exist.)

Jaeger-LeCoultre either exported 14k gold cases to the U.S. or manufactured them locally to reduce tariffs. However, this particular example is crafted in 18k yellow gold and bears a Swiss hallmark inside the case-back: #170 with a hammerhead, signifying Charles Dubois & Cie (Le Locle, Switzerland). This indicates that no tariff-saving measures were applied in this instance—lucky us!

This watch for sale is a true safe queen. The seller’s family didn’t even know it existed until they inherited it from their grandfather.

The watch case shows almost no signs of wear or age—it’s exceptionally sharp and shiny. The same goes for the dial, hands, and lume plots. Feel free to zoom into the pictures!

The beautiful two-tone dial (silver and white) boasts polished golden sub-dial rings, bold onyx-filled indexes, an applied golden “LeCoultre” logo, and a subtle light-blue tachymeter scale. Simply stunning!

While the case doesn’t have a reference number, an old catalog extract lists this model as the “DLX Chronograph III”.

There’s very little information available online about this watch, but thanks to the research by Goldammer, I was able to uncover some incredibly useful insights. You might want to check them out HERE.

To complement the watch, I’ve chosen a handmade Peccary leather strap in golden brown. Peccary leather, commonly used for high-quality driving gloves, is known for being the softest leather available—and trust me, it lives up to the hype. The strap is paired with a newer, original JLC pin buckle (gold-plated).

I love goooold…! Are you ready to become a “Goldmember”?
