ZENITH EL PRIMERO ESPADA SUB SEA MOON PHASE – 1975
Complicated...yes.
The El Primero, as we all know, was the first automatic chronograph caliber ever made. Even though some other important manufacturers came up with own automatic chrono calibers in 1969, Zenith was still the first to present their fully new developed movement to the market in January 1969.
The first “El Primero” caliber was named 3019PHC and had a date function besides the chronograph. It was presented in the iconic Zenith El Primero A384 / A385↵
The Espada “Sub Sea” or “Moon phase” is powered by the magnificent cal 3019PHF, which is the rarest production movement ever made by Zenith.
Excursion, why 3019PHC and 3019PHF:
First two digits: “30” stands for 30 mm diameter of the movement.
Third digit: “1” stands for the chronological count of calibers with the same diameter…”1″ because it’s the first of this series.
Fourth digit: “9” indicates the movement type = Chronograph
The letters were taken from the Martel Watch series. P for Power (rotor), H for Hour (hour counting) and C for Calendar (3019PHC) and F for Full Calendar (3019PHF)
What can you buy here?
It’s not just a damn nice and rare watch, but it’s also an important part of Zenith’s history. Considering the fascinating years of Zenith watches (1969-1975) this Espada marks the sweet spot right in the middle.
There are actually two references of this model:
– A7817 (ca. 1970-1972)
– 01.0040.418 (ca. 1973-1975)
Both references look almost the same, the only difference is the ZENITH logo on the dial. Whilst the A7817 has the old “star” logo, the other reference already has the “new” square logo.
Both references have small production numbers.
About 250 pieces for the A7817 and less than 500 pieces for the latter one which we offer here.
Our example comes with a full service that was executed by ZENITH’s heritage department in Le Locle, Switzerland in January 2023. You will receive all these original documents with the watch, of course.
The full length “lobster” bracelet was made by “Gay Freres” and is very comfortable to wear…no pain if you have a hairy wrist!
